How far does the current representation of the gay community challenge that of previous years and how does this differ between the UK and America?

For my critical investigation I have chosen to look into the changes in representation of homosexual characters in UK and American television shows. To do this I need to look into a variety of different television shows and how each of these shows represents this category of characters based on the genre and target audience. I will also need to research into posters and promotional material so that I can get an idea of how gay characters are represented in still image and how they come across to the audience.
The main shows that I will be looking into are:
- Modern Family
- Looking
- The L Word
- Lip Service

Based on my investigation I aim to create a set of teaser posters for a TV drama focusing on a protagonist who is exploring their homosexual identity.
